Siblings 2016: May

15/05/2016

With the summer has come the sunshine, and with the sunshine, the chance to get out and about and have some adventures at the weekend.  And so yesterday with H off wielding a cricket bat in front of one solitary delivery as his team started their annual loosing streak, Kitty, Elma, Pip and I went on an expedition of our own.

The woods are only down the road, and on a still day you can still hear the motorway but as soon as you turn the corner away from the car park you feel like you could be in the middle of nowhere.

As we crossed the road Kitty turned to me with serious concentration to ask whether I thought mini beasts might like living in the forest, and when we decided that they probably would like it, it became our mission to see what we could find.  We saw butterflies, cabbage whites and the white ones with orange tips whose name I’ve forgotten, a couple of industrious bumble bees and as spider, as well as a very beautiful tortoiseshell butterfly that obligingly perched on a stone at the corner of the field and held quite still for us to watch, Pip found favourite stick after new favourite stick and would quite happily sit on the ground and start trying to dig up the path whenever the girls wanted to look at something more closely.

All tree stumps were for sitting on and jumping off, and where Pip was concerned, all mud was to be played in – which was interesting considering that in a fit of optimism we’d all come out in sandals (one or more of which may have been pressure washed with the garden hose as soon as we got home!).

Including a few stops for Kitty to recover from a dog walking past us (she really really doesn’t like dogs) we were out for a couple of hours, just pottering around in the sunshine, and it struck me that although I did carry Pip for a bit whenever he asked for a cuddle, it’s probably the longest trip I’ve done out of the house with all three on their own two feet.  I’m not going to be mothballing the buggy or the sling just yet, but it’s another little milestone passed as my three grow older, that moment where even the youngest can manage a decent walk, even if he was all but asleep on as we pulled into the drive when we got back home.

From the wide open bridleway we meandered down little paths into the centre of the wood, and found ourselves once more surrounded by bluebells.  It was only a couple of weeks ago that we were here for our Me and Mine photos for April, but where the flowers on the edge of the wood are starting to fade, the carpet in the very middle is as brilliant blue as ever, sprinkled with tiny white stitchwort.  We’re obviously not the only ones who think it’s the perfect place for photos; there was a well worn path to a tiny clearing in the middle of all that blue and the girls were happy to run off for a closer look at the flowers.  Pip bumbled after them, slightly bemused at finding himself in a dead end and giving them very puzzled looks as to why they thought it was so much fun before suddenly plopping down behind the nearest bluebell.

He was in his element today, there was mud, and sticks and more mud and lots of paths to run down, and Mama to snuggle into when he got tired, and I think he enjoyed it the most of all of us.

Kitty’s highlight was probably seeing the butterflies, and jumping off the tree stumps, and Miss Elma’s was the “blowing flower” (dandelion clock) we found hiding behind yet another bluebell. And mine? Mine favourite moment was when we first got onto the main track, and with no one else in sight, watching all three of them sprint off into the sunshine together,
