This is the first general election for all three little ones.  We’ve always taken the girls with us to vote and today was no different.  They might not really understand what it’s all about but I hope that they will simply absorb it as something that we just do.  We talked about the fact that 100 years ago today only their Daddy would have been allowed to vote, and that there are parts of the world where no one can vote, or where I still wouldn’t be allowed to vote.  I don’t know how much sank in, except perhaps a cake shop variation on Nick Clegg’s Nando’s voting analogy (not voting is going to Nando’s, refusing to order off the menu and then complaining that you don’t like the food that arrives), but I will take them with me every five years until it’s their turn to decide our future.

And as it’s voting season I would be truly grateful and honoured if you would consider voting for me in the MADs Blog Awards for Pregnancy Blog, Baby Blog, Preschool Blog and/or Writer.  You can nominate here, you only need to give an email address and it takes mere moments – thank you x

Thank you – it turned out to be a very unexpected election though I doubt much of that really sank in with the girls but they still got to enjoy the drama of it all!

This one has been the first one any of my lot have been interested in. The boys were really hooked, pre polling day and post results, Venetia was slightly interested pre-polling and coming with me to vote on the day, but was far more interested in the election going on at school – she was leader of ‘The Fun Party’, campaigning for more play time, less homework (they get virtually none!) and larger meal sizes at lunchtimes, and Maria was only interested in voting for her big sister at school! (The Fun Party came 3rd). It did feel to me that the younger generation generally was slightly more engaged with this election than in previous years, so hopefully that will continue.
