Baby Family Milestones Pip {the ordinary moments}

Let there be smiles

Babies are very very clever. Pip naturally is the cleverest baby that ever ever was, but other babies are clever too.

Because just when you feel that you’ve hit the pinnacle of tiredness; when you’re certain that the bags under your eyes could bring home the entire week’s shopping; and when you’re at that point where unless you get a nap and soon you’re going to stop making any sort of coherent sense, your baby smiles.

And with that smile, all the sleepiness just melts away.

It’s just utterly mesmerising watching them first try; Pip’s smiles started with hisย eyes, a little lightness and happiness as he steadily stared up at me, and thenย gradually he started to work out how to move his mouth and cheeks to mirror all the smiles gazing down at him.

In a matter of days we’ve gone from him occasionally being able to tie the whole thing together to full on beaming smiles.

They’re pretty much reserved for his Mama at the moment, with an occasional flicker of a smile for Kitty and H, especially if we putย Dream a Little Dream on to play, and they are the highlight of my day.

And when I turn the light on in the wee small hours in response to some gentle squeaks in the Moses basket next to me to be met by a beaming smile that simply says “Mummy! You’re here!” I couldn’t do anything but scoop him up for the most enormous cuddle before we get down to the all important task of a little milk.

And his happiness is really rather contagious; there’s not a single member of the family that can see this boy smile without dropping everything to come and gaze in happy adoration and try to encourage another one!

He is right up there for size so I think he’s always going to look older than he is, but he does seem to be growing before our very eyes!

Baby smiles are definitely cure alls. And I think maybe nature has it worked out perfectly so that they arrive just when required. And then there are the baby chuckles lined up for the next wave of extreme tiredness!

Oh the giggles are awesome; I’m looking forward to those arriving ๐Ÿ™‚

Beautiful post, those first smiles really are so special. And it’s almost as if they are timed to coincide with that point when the tiredness is threatening to become overwhelming, they lift you right back up. Gorgeous boy, and gorgeous smiles ๐Ÿ™‚ #TheOrdinaryMoments

I always think that smiling comes just as you are finding parenting and your whole new routine at it’s hardest. The constant feeds, the exhaustion. Everything just piles up until it’s hard to see the light. Then your baby smiles and the thankless tasks suddenly has thanks – in those gorgeous smiley faces! x

    • Carie 13/10/2014 at 12:20 pm

Oh I agree – it definitely comes when you most need a little boost!

  • preeta samarasan 12/10/2014 at 5:56 pm

There really is nothing like those first smiles, is there? SUCH an exciting moment! Nearly makes you want to fall on your knees and weep with joy (well, maybe that’s partly the exhaustion, but…);-).

    • Carie 13/10/2014 at 12:19 pm

It’s that moment when the “Awww” turns seamlessly into a yawn isn’t it!

  • Katie @mummydaddyme 12/10/2014 at 7:51 pm

Ah so gorgeous Carie- well done Pip for smiling, I can definitely see why it’s a showstopper- I wouldn’t be able to concentrate on anything either! x

    • Carie 13/10/2014 at 12:18 pm

He’s going to be a heartbreaker if he keeps that up it’s true!

  • older mum in a muddle 12/10/2014 at 7:58 pm

My heart is melting…. I just adore the way he’s looking at you; so much love in that little face. X

    • Carie 13/10/2014 at 12:16 pm

I’ll admit it’s one of the definite perks of being Mummy that you get the really adoring smiles first – any minute now he’ll discover Daddy and the big sisters are more fun and that will be that!

  • Katie 12/10/2014 at 8:19 pm

He is such a clever poppet! They do time it just right don’t they, mine still do the same tbh. Just as i’m about to scream they do something to make my heart melt!
Lovely pictures Carie, he’s just beautiful! xxx
