Whenever I sit down and look through my week’s photos, to find a moment that sums up this week, or sums up the girls just as they are right now, I try to look for something that to me sums up the very essence of childhood. It might be the enormous smile of a little girl on the swings, the intrepid exploration of the splash pools, or the first time on the big slide. But for today, and courtesy of Elma, I bring you a public service announcement. I hope you are all paying very close attention.
No seriously, you may find you need to know this.
You see the last time Elma was on the beach she was nine months old, and being very carefully supervised by both parents and grandparents, mostly so that she didn’t escape out from under the shade of the parasol/beach tent combination into the scorching hot Spanish sun. Only this last week, under an English heaven, with a slightly higher availability of cloud cover to boost the shielding power of the baby suncream was she allowed a little more exploration. Well that, and she’s so very wrigglish and so very mobile that there’s absolutely no holding her back if she decides she’s off.
She toddled, she sat, she played bucket and spade, she chased after balls, her sister, her cousin and her “Gan-pa”, and she splashed in every available puddle or rock pool.
But I’m sure you knew how to do all of that.
What she also discovered, and I believe this may have come as somewhat of a surprise to both my little daughter and her beloved Minnie, is that sand,
but you absolutely, definitely, have to check more than once!
Because you just never know when that knowledge might come in handy. Especially when you live about as far away from the beach as it is possible to live and still be in England!
