Elma Family Garden Kitty {the ordinary moments}

Al fresco bath time

I think the thing that I love the most about the summer is how easy it makes it to say yes. Yes we can go to the play park, yes we can have lunch outside, yes you can go run around in the garden, there’s none of the really boring grown up consequences of the winter or even our horribly wet spring, the ones that say you’ll get wet, you’ll get really cold if you don’t keep your coat/hat/gloves on, you’re going to get mud all over the house.

I love coming home from nursery, throwing open the back doors, chucking a couple of quilts out onto the lawn and just relaxing into the end of the day. It always seems so much calmer than when we’re all indoors; watching the pigeons scuttle back and forth along the fence, inventing obstacle races for Kitty to burn off the last of her energy, and welcoming the sun on my skin and the smell of the neighbours’ honeysuckle.

And if you’ve spent the afternoon outside, had tea outside, had supper outside – well why not bath time too?

H had refilled the splash bucket with warmish water for Elma to have a good play in, and given she was already down to her nappy and kept trying to climb over the edge, we thought ‘why not?’ and lifted her in.

And with smiles like that it’s no wonder Kitty wanted to follow suit so we pressed the (happily empty) nappy bin into service.

Kit, my little six-year-old-sized three year old is just that smidgen bit bigger than both her sister and all available buckets, and where Elma could hunker down in a sort of cross legs position, snuggled up to her shoulders in the water, Kitty was never really going to fit like that. She gave it a try, decided that it really wasn’t very comfy being squished in a bucket, and decided to go for utter decadence and a sort of laid back, legs over the edge of the bath, someone will wait on me hand and foot kind of pose.

It might not have been the cleanest that they’ve ever ever been after a bath, but a little bit of grass in your bath water never hurt anyone, and if you’ve ever bought a Lush bath bomb you may even have gone so far as to pay for the privilege.

All I know is that I tucked two warm and slightly damp little girls into bed that night their smiles lit up the night.
