Elma Family Kitty {the ordinary moments}

Sleepytimes

25/05/2014

I’ll happily admit that there are days when bedtime comes as a bit of a relief; the days when parenting is just plain hard, and you’ve reached the point where either the little ones need to go to sleep, or you’re going to have to shut yourself in the bathroom just so that no-one’s touching you for a moment. But there’s a part of bedtime that I always enjoy, and that somehow seems to lift the mood and settle us all back down again.

I scoop Elma out of the bath and take her off to her room to be dried and pyjama-ed, and H and Kitty get up to whatever hijinks elicits lots of giggles and a small girl dressed and ready for bed, and then we all meet up in Kitty’s bed for story time.

When Elma was really small she’d sit tucked up in my arms, or be wrapped up in her blankie and starting to snuggle down, but these days she’s far too wrigglish to stay on my lap. Β She climbs up and into Kitty’s bed next to her sister and pulls the duvet up around both of them, and they wriggle a bit more and snuggle together, and then it’s story time.

Kitty choose the book nine times out of ten, and decides whether it’s a Mummy book or a Daddy book; usually depending on who’s available to read, and then we all curl up to listen,

or demand an alternative as the case may be!

There is something just incredibly snuggly about newly washed, tired, ready for bed little ones, and I love that Kitty will quite happily tolerate her sister beside her (just as long as Elma doesn’t start trying to make a bid for whoever is the current favourite teddy), and I love those gentle moments of the four (and a bit) of us snuggled up against the world. Β In our crazy busy days, especially when H or I or both are working above and beyond the norm, it can be one of very few moments in the day when we’re all together, and for all the work of being a Mummy, it’s being all together that I love the most.

And then, all too soon for some little people, it’s time for night night kisses, night night cuddles and Kitty snuggles down to sleep, while I carry Elma through to her room for milk and cuddles. Β It’s time for sleepy times.

Thank you – I think bedtimes are one of those things that seem to just evolve as the family grows so I’m with you, I’m curious about other people’s too!

What a lovely bedtime routine. We have a similar one of all cuddling up and reading stories together and each going off to our own bedrooms for sleepy time. So cute and I love all the photos. #ordinarymoments

Elma does like giving kisses to anyone who’ll sit still long enough to be smooched!

Aww that last photo is so beautiful, what a lovely memory to capture. I agree with what you have said about bedtime, for me it’s like all the stresses of the day seem to evaporate and I spend the half an hour of our routine feeling happy and blessed. x

Gorgeous photos! I have to admit most days I am so ready for the kids to go to bed, it’s not all that enjoyable at the moment though as Cherry is going through a phase of doing everything possible not to go to sleep. ‘one more drink’ and ‘one more question’ are said about five thousand times! x

Oh that sisterly smacker at the end!
It’s lovely to get this peek at your bedtime routine with the girls. I vividly remember reading bedtime stories in my little brother’s room. In fact, reading to my child is one of the things I looked forward to most about parenthood. M loves books (hurray!) but has been finding it hard to sit still for stories in the evening lately. Preferring instead to thwack you in the head with a book first thing in the morning… Whatever works, I guess!

Ah yes, the wake up smack round the face with a board book – it’s a classic!! I think it’s something that comes with age, we didn’t really start having bedtime story time with Kitty until she was old enough to actually sit still and listen, before that we just sat and sang to her for a bit!

Oh carrie they are so cute together! Kisses instead of headbuts must be lovely πŸ™‚ x

They have their fair share of disputes too don’t worry – but yes Elma giving smooches is one of the cutest things I have ever seen!

Bedtime is one of my top favs of the day. As you say, they are all freshly washed, dried, in fresh smelling jim jams and all chilled out. Feeling blessed wouldn’t be in it. Lovely post and super cute photos. x #ordinarymoments

How gorgeous…. those photographs are adorable. I always wondered how you juggled with bedtimes with more than one child. So so cute. X

Truth be told it’s taken a while to figure out, and I’m not quite sure how it will work out with three, but it’s mostly about one bedtime, two children!
