Baby Elma Family Kitty Living Arrows

Living Arrows 12/52

We had a very big treat this last week when my baby sister and her baby boy came to play for the day.  It was a visit somewhat born of necessity – I was asked to dial into a conference call for work for a couple of hours so I called little sis; “you know you were planning to come up and see us soon …!”

And once the call was out of the way we had the whole day to sit and chat and put the world to rights, and enjoy watching these little monkeys get to know each other a little better.

The not so tiny any more nephew is just shy of four months younger than Elma, and the bigger they both get, the less the difference shows.  Give them a couple of years and you’ll be hard pushed to choose the oldest on appearance alone.

At the moment the pair of them co-exist quite happily.  They’re not playing together, or even particularly interested in each other as people, merely as possessor of the toy they want, but as we’ve got plenty of wooden blocks no-one had to go without.

Kitty on the other hand simple adores “my cousin”.  I think it can only be the novelty value of a different smaller person in the house.  As I said, he really isn’t that much smaller than Elma, and I don’t think there’s anything new in the big sister role per se.  She and I had had a big chat in the morning about how Mama was going to have to do a work call and she had to be her Auntie’s biggest best help in looking after the babies while Mama was on her call. I think she must have taken it to heart; I’m told she tried to pass him just about every toy under the sun, and when he became rather overwhelmed by the new environment, this new big sister, and the changes to his routine, and let out an angry wail in protest I’m reliably informed that she patted him on the head saying “Don’t worry little cutie pie!”

She wanted to go and supervise when he was having his nappy changed, and when we went out walking it wasn’t my buggy that she wanted to hold onto.

Elma snoozed throughout my call so in the end Zee only had to go from one to two children for the morning, and I don’t think I’ve completely put her off having more children in due course; at least not once I’d reclaimed my children and bought her a burger and a diet coke at the pub for lunch!

I’m lucky enough that by the wonders of modern technology I get to see this gorgeous duo several times a week by Facetime, but it just isn’t quite the same as being able to give them a hug in person, or tickle tiny nephew until he gets the giggles, so it was just lovely to have them come to play.  Because nothing beats being able to see this reaction in person:

Oh that must be so great being close enough to visit so often – my sister’s an hour or two away depending on the M25 and I wish we got to see each other in real life more often!

Cherry sees her cousins once a week, one of them is the same age as her and it’s only really the last few months they’ve actually started playing together! Before that they would just ignore each other or steal toys! Lovely photos x

That sounds familiar! Kitty has a second cousin a week younger than her and it’s only in the last year that they’ve done more than regard each other with deep suspicion!

Aw thank you – it’s the Melissa and Doug kitchen that we gave Kitty the Christmas before last and it’s brilliant, the perfect size for two little girls to play with, and not too overwhelming for our lounge either!

Lovely pictures – the children all look so happy together. I need to give my brother and sister-in-law a kick up the bum so Toby will have some cousins too!

    • Carie 27/03/2014 at 8:39 am

I’m really lucky, I’ve got six cousins, but they’re all a little older so I’m glad our children are all about the same age, it’s more fun while they’re little!
