Crafty Ideas Family Handmade Handmade for Kitty Kitty {the ordinary moments}

Work in Progress

02/03/2014

It’s what you might call an ordinary moment in progress.

It started with two leftover newspapers and a very cunning plan. H has been spending a little longer than usual in his commute to work this week, and he’s clearly been putting the time to good use.  His vision involved glue, paint, probably glitter, and lots and lots of mess if at all possible, all to make a paper mache hat or some sort or other for a little girl who loves both sticky mess and dressing up. Perfect!

They decided to go one better than your traditional party hat cone and with a bit of stiff card purloined from the art stash, and a very fetching pink balloon carefully selected from the only tiny packet available on an emergency run to the village shop, they set up a rough hat form and set to with the watered down PVA glue.

It’s only had a couple of layers of paper so far, and it’s got a wonderful wobbly ripple about the brim that I really hope is still there is several layers of glue and paint later.

Kitty’s already decided on the colour, “pink! maybe purple!” and I think she went to bed dreaming of visions of ribbons and glitter glue and all the decorations she’s going to heap on its precarious brim.  But that won’t be for a couple of weeks at least; with all of the layers and drying time we need to make it sturdy enough to withstand being an accessory to Princess Tinkerbell Pirate Kitty, this isn’t a quick scribble of a project.

This is the start of her first big art project, and a special Daddy and Kitty project too, although I think I might be allowed a consulting role in the matter of trimmings, mostly so that they can have full access to my stash of feathers and twinkles.

It’s going to be a very cute hat, but that’s not really why I love it quite to much. It’s mostly that I love watching H with our daughters; listening to their chatter and progress from my perch at the other end of the table or as I potter around doing odds and ends.   For Kitty, whose world rather revolves around her Daddy right now, it’s been a perfect Saturday morning; a bacon buttie for breakfast, ballet class and then home to play with Daddy; and that’s an ordinary moment worth remembering.
