Me and Mine 2016: September

September is the month of new starts, of a fresh academic year, and an unmistakeable feeling of a nice clean fresh sheet of paper set out in front of you ready to be filled with plans.  Our metaphorical paper has been filled, to the point of scribbling in the margins in tiny writing, and it feels a world away from the long gentle days of the summer.

Space for the Butterflies - Me and Mine

Work has been busy as everyone comes back from their holidays and starts getting stuck in with a back to school vengeance, and at home Kitty is loving her first term in her new school, and Elma’s only regret is that preschool doesn’t last longer.  Pip is getting used to having Daddy all to himself, and John is getting used to Pip’s incessant requests to “play hockey Daddy!” at all times and in all places.  Our days are full and the weeks seems to be zipping by at a vast rate of knots.

These pictures sum up September in more ways than one – the platform that the children are standing on is the base and balcony to their new playhouse.  It was Pip’s birthday present from an assortment of family, it arrived in early September, and when it’s finished he and the girls are going to absolutely love it.  So far H and I have made the base, and despite intention after intention to get it finished it just has’t happened yet.  Hopefully we’ll have lovely weather this weekend and we can spend a bit of time getting it all up and organised and watertight before the rain really comes.

The busyness has meant that taking our Me and Mine pictures this month required a bit of effort, and more, than that, a continuing serious commitment to the project.  We had days of lovely weather but we were all busy, or not all home, we had days when it rained and we were home but one of the children was out of sorts and not even slightly interested in taking photos, it’s been too hot, too sunny, too dark, too rainy and too much to try to organise while the children were distracted visiting family.

I’ve never missed a month since I first started this project, more than three years of watching our family grow month by month, and I just couldn’t bear the idea of not having a picture for September.  In the grand scheme of world peace and things like that it’s a silly nonsense sort of thing, what does it matter if I skip a month? But silly or not, these pictures, this whole blog in fact, is an expression of my love for my family.  It’s my gift to them that when they’re all grown up they can come back and read about just how muddy they used to get as little kids (clue: very!), or that the only way we could persuade Pip to stay on the platform while I ran back and forward to the camera was by putting a hockey stick up there with him.

And so at the end of a working day we rallied the troops, bribed them with jaffa cakes, and set up the camera.

Pictures from our garden, pictures that I’ve taken in some form or other a hundred times before, pictures that for all the effort required, neither John nor I would be without.

My little family, in September:

The Me and Mine Project

It’s been a while since I had a quality out-take but I couldn’t resist this one – having taken pictures with each of the three children held across us, we thought we’d try with Daddy …!

Haha! Love that last one!! And I just CANT BELIEVE how big all your children are now! Where did those tiny tots go who covered your posts when i first started reading your blog?! PS… I’ve taken note of the Jaffa cakes… Genius! It is tough to make time sometimes, but I never regret it!!

Jaffa Cakes definitely oil the wheels of parenting around here! And quite- I have no idea how they got so big, it must be a combination of genetics and just possibly the Jaffa cakes!

It seems there were a lot of last minute photos this month and I really do think they are some of the best. I love the second to last one with Elma and her daddy looking at each other, gorgeous. Good luck with building the playhouse x #meandmineproject

I hope so – now all we need is the good weather in which to build it!!

September seems to have been very last minutes for most people! I know it was for us, but then it usually is as I’m just not very organised! Great ohotos though x

I usually try to think a little bit ahead, at least in making sure that we’ve taken pictures by the weekend before the end of the month but this was a proper last minute job – there must be something in the air!

Haha! I love the last one! We were late to join the #meandmine project, and I am gutted to say we missed a few months this year, from May – July and I really wish we hadn’t. I love looking back on these photos already, and Im sure our little ones will love looking back and reading the stories too. Some months they seem to just happen naturally while we are out and about, and some months (like this one) they are a rushed, last minute thing. I love that Autumn is coming and I am looking forward to life slowing down a tiny bit now as Autumn arrives, hopefully anyway! Hope you have a lovely October

It’s nice to think that life might calm down a bit as we head into October but then I’m ever the optimist!!

Thank you very much – it’s very addictive and I love having all the photos to look back on 🙂

That last photo is hilarious! Lots of great photos this month.

    • Carie 02/10/2016 at 8:39 pm

It’s definitely up there as one of my favourite out takes!

  • Julia @ Rainbeaubelle 01/10/2016 at 6:52 am

You are right, this month has been so so busy, it must be the new starts for everyone and the season change that is wiping us out! Can’t wait to see your playhouse finished, my kids would love one of those. Fab pics – especially the last one! x

    • Carie 02/10/2016 at 8:38 pm

Well it does now have a roof so we’re getting there – I just hope we can move it when it’s finished!

When I saw your post on Instagram earlier, I had to look up Jaffa cakes. Love the info about the lawsuit (not sure if that is the correct term!) regarding if they are a cake or a biscuit for VAT purposes!!

Oh that’s one of the best cases in law school, I love the judicial reasoning on that one. The other great one is whether Pringles are a crisp or not!

  • EssexKate 01/10/2016 at 8:41 pm

Ha ha love the out take. I’m totally with you about not missing a month. I was so sad to miss one last month, but my daughter wasn’t with me so I had to accept it.

    • Carie 02/10/2016 at 8:37 pm

Sometimes it’s just not possible but I’m glad that when I could get a photo, I did 🙂

These are absolutely my fave photos of the 5 of you! So much fun and happiness! #meandmineproject

Each month you get creative and always having fun with your family captures. I love it Carie. Your kiddos are growing up so fast too. Love these moments where we can look back and see over just a month how different they have changed and grown. One of my favorite things about this project. Beautiful photos hun. #meandmineproject
