Christmas Elma Family Kitty Me and Mine Milestones Photography Pip

Me and Mine – a family portrait for December

I think everyone that joins in with the Me and Mine project regularly will say that one of the nicest things about it is having the pictures that you wouldn’t have taken if you weren’t being prompted to find a picture with all of you in it. And it’s true, before I started this project 18 months ago, I had pictures of all of us on high days, holidays and that was about it if we were lucky.

I’m quite good at remembering to take pictures of all of us on birthdays now, or to celebrate some special moment, but I’ll admit this is the first time I think I’ve ever actually managed to take a picture of the whole family on Christmas day.  Christmas photos, yes, photos with the tree in the background yes, but organising the whole family into the right spot, hoping for good light and having time to take photos in between church and presents and roasting turkeys and making yorkshire pudding batter, well it doesn’t usually happen.

But this year Christmas Day dawned bright and sunny, I discovered that in moving around the furniture earlier in the year I’d moved the play kitchen to the perfect spot to stand in for the tripod, and after that all we needed was a bit of luck, and the remote trigger to pay attention.

So here we are, our first photo of the family on our first Christmas Day as a family of five, Kitty and Elma in beautiful Christmas dresses, Pip dressed in a reindeer babygro and the ‘My First Christmas’ t-shirt that his cousin wore only last year, while H and I wore the clothes that were the least covered in baby drool – well at least they were when we put them on.

I’m sat on my knees which is why I seem to be so much taller than everyone else, and I rather suspect the book on family portraits that’s sat under the tree behind me is going to come in handy over the next year; I still harbour dreams of photos where everyone is looking at the camera and even looking vaguely happy about it – Elma looks mostly hungry in these pictures, which I think is why she’s clutching the bag of mini party rings from her stocking.

But I don’t really see all of that when I look at these pictures. They are in some ways the tipping off point for my memories, not the memories themselves.  I look at them and smell the cooking coming from the kitchen, see the sunshine coming dancing in and showing up the cobwebs and hear Kitty’s excited voice “and then can we open a present!”.

I see joy, and celebration, and I see my little family, at Christmas.

Oh I love these Carie. It was a Christmas day photo that prompted this entire project two years ago and it means we have three years of Christmas day photos now. All are perfectly imperfect, because lets be honest, Christmas is amazing and magical but rarely picture perfect. But like you, mine are full of the things I will remember about the day for years to come, and that is what its all about. x

And you don’t want to spend too much of Christmas fussing over photos either; it’s all about capturing the moment and then moving on to actually living it, so perfectly imperfect will have to do 🙂

First things first, there is such a thing as mini party rings? How did I not know this?

I do enjoy your Me & Mine posts, especially since your “mine” has increased by one this year. Here’s to you having a wonderful New Year and may 2015 bring you and yours all that you wish for.

    • Carie 02/01/2015 at 10:14 am

Oh you have to discover mini party rings – they come in tubs of little bags at Christmas and Father Christmas buys lots!!

Gorgeous photos. It was a Christmas day photo of us all that made me want to take part in the linky. So nice that you have captured your family of 5 for the first Christmas photo of you all.

Love your photos. We never manged to take many photos on Christmas day together as it was Darren’s first working and it was chaos. I’m so glad you managed to do it even if it was a bit of a struggle. I must admit I do like how none of you are looking at the photo at the same time x

    • Carie 02/01/2015 at 10:09 am

Now that’s the story of our photos! And yet when I took pictures of all of the children and my nephew for a Christmas present for my Dad, I had a picture of all of them looking at the camera and went with one where they were all looking at Pip instead!

It’s been so lovely watching your family grow over the last year and this final picture of 2014 shows you as such a formed family – it’s hard to imagine Pip not there anymore! Happy New Year x

    • Carie 02/01/2015 at 10:05 am

I know it’s only been four months but I genuinely just can’t visualise life without him!

  • Caro | The Twinkles Momma 01/01/2015 at 1:25 pm

Well, that’s it! A whole 12 months gone by in the blink of an eye! And I totally agree with you — we’d probably not have many pics of the four of us, as a family, without being prompted. This is such a good project for that!

Beautiful pics of your little unit — it’s been lovely watching the little ones grow and change.

Happy new year pet! Here’s to 2015 X

    • Carie 02/01/2015 at 9:59 am

Thank you – and Happy New Year to you too 🙂

I love these Carie! It’s been a pleasure watching your family grow through your Me and Mine photos this year! Here’s to watching you grow even more in 2015, Pip may well be walking by next December, it’s so scary how much they grow! x

    • Carie 04/01/2015 at 8:43 pm

Don’t say things like that, that’s positively scary!

  • Jenny 03/01/2015 at 12:08 pm

Ahh Carie I love your family photos in front of the tree. A big must each year for sure. Your family is so beautiful as is your blog. I have really enjoyed reading it this year. Look forward to another amazing year of it together. 😉 #meandmine

    • Carie 04/01/2015 at 7:35 pm

Aww thank you so much 🙂

  • sally 07/01/2015 at 4:30 pm

We have very few photos of all of us together, this project would be perfect, but sadly I don’t think I’d manage to persuade Harry, who is never overly keen to be in photos and definitely not to be featured in blogland. I think I may have to try and play along silently, but blogging it does give that extra incentive to make it happen.

    • Carie 08/01/2015 at 9:14 am

My H pretends not to be too keen but now that we’ve got into the swing of it I know he treasures those photos. I think the more you take the less you mind that you look a bit goofy in a few of them – somehow the pressure’s off when it’s just one of at least twelve pictures, not ‘the picture’ for the year
