Elma Family Kitty {the ordinary moments}

The quiet moments

After the sunshine, the running around, the splash pool, the zip slide, the friends and the picnics come the quiet moments.

we’ve been out and about a lot these past few days, making the most of every inch of sunshine, just in case it turns out to be the only summer we get, and it’s been glorious.  But then there comes a moment when we’ve eaten all the food, and everyone is just a little bit hot and on the verge of being fractious and no matter how many errands we’re supposed to be running, or chores I’m supposed to be getting done, the only thing we really really need to do is to come home, open all the windows to let the breeze start to cool the house, and decamp to the garden.

The girls will sit on a quilt, or snuggle next to each other on their monkey swing seat and have a drink and maybe a little something biscuity for their tea, and I’ll try to remember to have a drink myself (I’m completely terrible at drinking enough water) and we’ll read a story or Kitty will chatter about our day and very very occasionally I’ll even get a chance to do a little knitting.

It never lasts too long; after a little while their energy levels bounce back up again and they’re off, making pavement chalk puddles in the grass, trying to go down the slide back-to-front and upside down, and, naturally, deciding that the easiest way to share their new car is to both squeeze in at once!

It’s a little moment in our days, but somehow for that moment it feels like we have all the time in the world, everything else falls away and I get to just be with my children.  It’s incredibly ordinary, but there are days when I don’t get to be there for that moment, and the girls aren’t necessarily together either so I think that makes it definitely worth treasuring.

Thank you – they’re the kind of moments I think I easily overlook so it feels nice to write them down 🙂

Oh bless them both squeezing into the car! Love the pics and those quiet moments are the best. It’s weather like this that makes me wish we had a garden. #theordinarymoments xxx

They were so funny – Elma was just not going to wait for Kitty to get out, and although at least half the photos I have have Kitty making a cross face, I think she rather enjoyed having her sister cuddled up with her!

Definitely moments to treasure. Sometimes those times when you’re not really doing anything are the most precious but so easily forgotten. Lovely photos too x

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head: precious but not necessarily memorable – definitely moments to record for a rainy day!

I hope this doesn’t come across as strange, but the photo of the two of them on their swing, quietly having their biccies, makes me want a brother or sister for M. And that’s even though I’m not even sure that I want a second child at all! I just love the idea that you not only share the quiet moments with them, but that they share it with each other. Simply being, and relaxing together, is a truly great thing.

haha, I was about to write a comment so similar to this! I completely agree, that photo of them both on the swing makes me so excited for the (maybe) future sibling for Arlo.

I’m beginning to feel I need to post one of the pictures of Kitty looking squashed and cross in the car just to counteract this impending baby boom!!

No I don’t think that’s strange at all; I love looking at their relationship from the outside looking in and it seems to be in the quiet moments that they are at their most gentle and loving to each other.

These are the type of ordinary moments that I absolutely treasure and crave the most, so I really appreciate and love this post Carie. Just the simplest, most ordinary moment that you know you will think of when they are grown up. What a lovely thing that you have managed to photograph it and that photo of them on the swing is just gorgeous. x

Thank you – it seemed the very most ordinary of all our moments this week but I sat there watching them thinking, this, this right now is just perfect – and for me that means I need to write it down!!

This is a lovely lovely post, and gorgeous photos as ever. We’ve really been enjoying the sunshine too, but it’s been limited to our back garden as Little A has come down with chicken pox, still, at the very least, it’s not raining and we have happy weather! X

    • Carie 19/05/2014 at 10:01 pm

Aww thank you 🙂 and I hope you’re getting an easy ish ride with the chicken pox – it was not fun at all when my two had it!

Definitely worth treasuring those quiet moments. Life isn’t about go go go all the time. It’s great to cherish those little moments that you are all together but not doing anything particular. Lovely photos!!! #ordinarymoments

I think sometimes it feels like it is go go go all the time which is perhaps why the moments of still stick out so much in the mind!!
