Exploring Family Kitty {the ordinary moments}

Horsey Horsey don’t you stop

09/03/2014

We took the girls to London this week on a sort of impromptu day trip; sort of impromptu being the trip that you talk about as a nice idea for several weeks and then only seriously get down to planning it after the children have gone to bed the night before you’re actually going!

It was a day full of wonderful moments, and I shall have to add to the Postcards series before too long, but for today, I have just a little snippet to share.  It happened as we came out from the shadows of Waterloo Bridge, strolling along the South Bank in the twilight to stretch our legs and let a certain someone work all her wiggles out.  She was sat up on H’s shoulders and as we came around the corner the wiggling started again in earnest.

“Daddy! I just really want to get down! Please!!…..Daddy!!!”

It was there, and it was beautiful, and all she knew in that moment was that she had to go closer, and quickly and now.

A carousel.  Golden and luminous in the dwindling daylight, a blur of lights and tinny organ music and horses dancing to the tune.  It’s no surprise that she found it utterly irresistible.

We stood by the railings and watched a ride go round, Kitty glued to the circling pink and gold and H and I chatting by that parental telepathy that you never could quite understand as a child yourself, but comes so easily now:

“What do you think?”

“Have we got enough cash?”

“Yes; do you think she’d like it, or try to climb off mid-ride?”

“Shall we ask her and see?”

Yes, she very much would like it, and with promises to hold on very tightly, she and H disappeared off to the ticket office.

Elma and I found them the perfect horse, with plenty of pink for Kitty, which just so happened to be set up in a lovely spot for taking pictures, and they climbed on.

And then they were off; cantering around and around and around, a beaming smile on every circuit.

And then all too soon the bell rang, the horses slowed and they gently drifted to a halt, and all that remained was to give “Our Horsey” a nice pat, and perhaps a wooden sugar lump.
