Christmas Family Finished Handmade Handmade for Kitty Kitty Knitting

To keep out the cold {handmade for Kitty}

If there is one fundamental rule of life that I have learnt from growing up with a little sister and a fairly crafty Mum it is that in all things, yarn, fabric, thread and all things creative, equality shall prevail.

And so if Elma was going to get a Mama-made Christmas present, then my goodness me so was Kitty.

Fortunately, what Kitty really wanted, really really wanted, was a hat.

She’d chosen the yarn a while back, on an afternoon forage into Mama’s yarn stash, pulling out a skein of my fluffy handspun from goodness knows how long ago.  It’s pink and purple merino, spun to be fuzzy, and plied into a gorgeous smooshy cloud of little miss’ favourite colours in a roughly aran weight.

She popped it into my knitting bag.

It’s sat there for a good few months but every time it crept to the top she’d give it a gentle pat, and remind me;

“That’s a hat for me Mama!”

I did contemplate making up my own pattern but with Christmas rapidly approaching and all the fun and games of Elma’s party my brain ached at the very thought of it, so I turned to Ravelry and into my search for “a nice easy toddler hat, with a bit of interest for the knitter, but not so much that it got lost in the yarn”, walked the Able-Cable Hat.

Five days later, and a whole five days before Christmas, a small squishy parcel made it’s way into the pile, and on Christmas day Kitty finally got her hat.  I don’t think she took it off until bath time.

I love that the cables aren’t really cables but pairs of increases and decreases,

I love that it shows off all the colours in the yarn

I dearly love the way that the points come together in a little five petalled swirl at the crown,

But more than anything else I love that from a little plastic bag of fluff and my hands, I made my girl smile.
